Looking for a cheap-yet-decent quad core CPU

Preferably around $100-200 range, any suggestions?

A completely new PC or upgrade from your old PC? What's the budget for the CPU and MB together if you are going for a new one?

What is your socket type and what type of motherboard do you have?

You haven't told me if you gonna upgrade or buy a new one yet. What's your GFX card? Maybe it's not actually necessary to get a new platform 'cuz games rely on GFX cards.

@alex
I want to buy a new one, but already got the rest covered except MB and CPU.
Not really, I've got an 460 GTX but a lot of new games seems to be CPU-intensive and most of em are nfs games :(

@jack
My PC is freakin old, I wanna replace everything so it wouldn't matter what MB I have now :lol:

@silver
Figures that, so how much money do I have to spend to get a decent quad CPU and MB?

if you want both a decent quad core and mb, you are probably looking at around 300 bucks. don't look at anything cheaper. nowadays even "decent" is a pretty high standard. so if you are a gamer and you want to experience a decent quality out of your games, you shouldn't really pick whatever is cheaper. because whatever is cheaper is also going to be obsolete sooner. so in the end it's only going to cost you more. you should better buy something a little better than "decent", but you know it's going to last

True, but the problem is I'm not quite sure which CPU are "decent" enough to last several years, same thing with MB.
Right now I think I'm going with AMD because they got "best bang for your buck" according to some articles, still dunno which one to pick though.

For gaming, buy i3 2100 and Asrock H61M/U3S3. AMD's CPUs aren't decent these days.

Isn't i3 dual core? And why's AMD CPU not decent enough these days? I've seen a lot of quad AMD running at high core speed.

I'm crappy at this hardware stuff, need some explanations :lol:

It's dual-core, but it's using newer micro-architecture and thus more efficient. Have to say that FX-4100 is a dual-core CPU indeed. AMD claims that it's quad-core, but it only has 4 integer processing units and only 2 floating processing units. Bulldozer micro-architecture doesn't perform that well, also, old Athlons' micro-architecture is too old.

So you're saying that even though it is dual core it can perform better than older quad core processors?
